For a number of years, the retired ministers and their spouses of the South Carolina Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church had a special table in the T. O. Evans Dining Hall and were served their meals during the week of Camp Meeting in appreciation for their many years of service in the Kingdom of God. This was and still is a special time of fellowship that they look forward to each year.
The vision for something more to honor these "special servants of God" was birthed in the hearts of Superintendent Rev. David A. McKenzie and his wife, Rev. Mrs. Erleen McKenzie. Later, Rev. Jesse D. Simmons was elected Conference Superintendent and the Royal Elders Association was organized on Wednesday, July 18, 1984 with both a constitution and bylaws. The first Royal Elders Executive Committee consisted or Rev. David A. McKenzie, Rev. J. J. Jackson and Rev. Don Watts.
The Royal Elders agreed to meet on Thursday afternoon each year at Camp Meeting in the H. P. Robinson Memorial Auditorium. This was to be a time of devotion, spiritual enrichment, asking and sharing questions and a wonderful time of fellowship. Rev. David A. McKenzie was the first president leading the activities of the group.
The years have seen great progress in this program. Today, Rev. H.
Larry Jones serves as the coordinator of the Royal Elders. Now
instead of one table in the dining hall, a number of tables are
reserved for the Royal Elders giving special tribute to these great
spiritual warriors and their companions. And for a number of years
now, we have also set aside the first Tuesday of December for our
annual "Royal Elders Christmas Banquet". The program each year is
dedicated to them and special recognition is given to each one who
is able to attend. What a joy it is today to serve, honor and
recognize the Royal Elders of the South Carolina Conference.
